OK, I like this one…

After using another photo upload plugin in the past which was somewhat limited, I like this one from the test so far (Photo uploading has been quite limited in Wordpress prior to WP Version 2.0.x - Mostly linked to outside photo album sites like Flick.com or just a simple image upload patch).

I loved the Flickr plugin when I messed around with it after Jean of BicycleJournals.net had installed it…Only problem, it was tied to Flickr rather than being self hosted.

The benefits to this are obviously that you don’t have to host the photos on your own space, which could add up after awhile in terms of hosting space (although you would have to upload quite a few photos).

What I like about this program is that it takes your photos and creates two new images from the original. It makes a thumbnail for the post and then a downsized form of the original that is available on the click. It can be customized to place the original in the post instead of the thumb…or whatever…and links to albums as well in some regard, although I haven’t gotten too much of a look at this yet as I only have one photo in.

Installation was, well, Wordpress plugin installation…which if you know how to do this via ftp, isn’t bad at all. It then has a control menu from the options tab in the WP Admin, where you setup the directories to store the photos and configure the various options. You have to create one directory and make it writeable.

Great plugin so far!

Also forgot to mention that this program has a watermark function which is really nice. You can put a label over the photos if you want so that they have your website address or whatever…nifty!

After working some more with uploading photos to my friends section, I created a friends category.

What I found with this photo album feature is great. You can create categories and the photos are displayed with a link in the sidebar for the category when the photo is being looked at it the larger view (after clicking). This bar on the side with all the categories is configurable, and can be removed all together (I believe).

What I found was any photos that you do not want included in one of the linked album categories can just be uploaded to the default category, and it is then not able to be navigated to…(again, I think you can turn off the album feature altogether). My photo above attached to this post is in the default category and is hidden from view in the album…

Also encountered one upload of a picture greater than 512k, so there must be some configuration option for file size…I think that’s in the configuration panel.

You also have to be a little careful with the mass edit function which lets you delete or reassign categories.

I noticed that although my picture above is in the default category, when you go to mass edit, the drop down moves to friends. Since this is the only category at present, not sure what happens yet with multiple categories.

When you hit the update, you could reassign this picture by accident easily to the friends category.

This doesn’t affect the mapping of the image from the post at all as the programming makes the adjustment the next time the page is viewed, but it does classify the pictures into the album categories, and the picture would be included in that album.

Again, this may just be a quirky thing that happens just from a photo placed in default, where it jumps to the first category.

At any rate, a very small price to pay for such convenience!
