The Wordpress blog platform or engine is free to use.  There are also many plugins that allow for customizing functions, such as including a contact form or photo gallery in addition to the base functions of the blogging software.  People blog make blogging sites either to showcase articles on topics that they are an expert, to add to an existing site or to blog for money (share their expertise while collecting revenues on ads or by selling their products).

Wordpress.org, the main Wordpress website offers a free blog to anyone that registers that is hosted on a subdomain.  Most serious writers and publishers however will seek out hosting and development as they wish to take advantage of the benefits of search engines, which requires the site to be hosted independently, typically on a seperate domain name that the user registers.

Many cPanel hosting control panels will offer an auto install, however, it is typically not the most current version, and still further, many users have trouble with the configuration and end up with a broken Wordpress.  Although the product is free, hiring a professional company that specializes in the platform can be a decision that can save time and money while resulting in an end product that has benefits of customization (ie: custom banners inserted, design changes, the correct plugins for the site owner’s needs and a design that is tweaked to route traffic wisely according to the desired end result or action of the visitor.

What you will need:

Hosting Account - Most hosting accounts will work for blog hosting.  The hard concept to understand is that cheap is not necessarily good.  The account does not have to be just for blogs.  It is suggested to get a hosting account with cPanel, which allows access to setting up the required SQL databases (so yes, your account will also have to allow for MySQL databases).  It should also allow FTP access (explained below).

FTP Software (suggested to use Filezilla or CoreFTP, however any FTP software should work) - The FTP software allows you to upload the core files of Wordpress to your hosting account.  This also allows you to edit key files once they are on the server.  This is where some of the compexity comes in as there are hundreds of files located in many directories.

Download Most Current Wordpress Version - Features are constantly added to make using the platform easier and more robust.  All of the files are zipped up and must be unpacked to your computer prior to uploading to your hosting server.

Zip Software - To unpack files (theme, engine, plugins)

Theme - Wordpress themes are what change the look and function from the standard that is installed when you begin.  It is what takes the look and makes it match your needs or the needs of your business.  Many of the components of these themes can also be further customized by a professional Wordpress webmaster.  Just like the other files, these are typically zipped and must be unpacked and uploaded to the correct location, then activated in the WP admin panel.

Time and Patience - The entire process has been designed to be as easy as possible given the complexity of what is considered by most to be the strongest system when you are ready to say “create blog!, ” due to the search engine results obtained and the positive effect on your net results.

Too Confusing?  Have a Pro Do It. - It can be confusing and things can break if even one item is not configured properly…many opt to hire a professional blog webmaster for the base install, SQL setup, theme install, theme customization and installation and configuration of desired plugins.  It is the same process as making a regular website with the advantages of WP, yet due to being professionals with the engine and having some base to start with, the setup is usually more cost effective than a regular website.  Once the setup is done, the user (publisher) just has to login and begin writing and submitting their content to the World!

What to Watch Out for With Pro Installs - Just like anything, there are always cheap options being thrown at you via ads on search results or websites.  You might see a super cheap price for the setup and hosting.  When it comes to customization, these companies may either not do it at all or charge prices that then escalate what seemed to be cheap to a price that is not.  Highly suggested to get an all inclusive quote based on your needs once they are reviewed by a professional specializing in blogging or website and blog integration.  This way, there are not any “gotchas.”

What this does is takes a slogan and matches the slogan text to a Flickr image.  You can’t steal the images, but if you are like me, you’re overloaded with information on a daily basis and the simplest of tasks such as creating something short can be a monumental task!  Yeah, we like to write and write and write, so this can be a challenge.

I was amazed when I saw how this worked.  It shoots out idea after idea after idea which you can easily adapt with your own photos and similar slogans.  Whether you are a marketing or advertising agency or just a web developer like me, this is such a useful tool.  Some of the suggestions are not exactly right on…*laugh*…but most of them are pretty good.  Some will just make you laugh…but the entire concept is genious…its a must see…

The basic programs that I like and use are Zone Alarm, Microsoft Defender, AVG, Symantec Norton Antivirus, Spybot Seek and Destroy and AdAware by Lavasoft.  I also utilize Panda Softwares free scan.  All of these are free (Except Norton) and I’ll go into detail below about some of the benefits.

Zone Alarm - This is a must for anyone with an always on internet connection.  The main benefit of this program is that it seals the open ports on your computer connection and takes away the display of your user information such as your name that is affixed to your computer.  This alone is huge.  The program also allows for control of programs that access the internet.  You can see the programs that you use that either send or receive information to the internet and control this process so that they either have automatic access or the program can prompt you each time for approval or rejection.  It will also prompt you for any new program that is trying to access the net.  You don’t realize how many programs are asking for net access, and they gain it automatically without some sort of intermediary software such as this.  See the Link for the Zone Alarm Free Download.  Seal Those Open Ports and Operate in Stealth Mode!

Microsoft Windows Defender is available for free and autoupdates directly from Microsoft and runs automated spyware and virus scans.  It also protects from pop-ups.  I have had no problems with this running along side of the other programs I use.  This is a program that is offered for free directly by Microsoft.  I’ve been using it since it began in its beta version…and a couple name changes later, its still going strong (and still free!).  Microsoft Windows Defender is Free!

AVG Anti Virus - What AVG does is similar to Norton.  I have had AVG discover potential threats on webpages that Norton has not, and vice versa, so I suggest both of these.  AVG Has a Free Version and Some Pay Upgrades.

Norton Antivirus from Symantec - Most people use either Norton or McAfee for their main virus protection.  I have tried both, but find McAfee tends to slow my system down too much, so I side with Norton Antivirus.  You need to have one of the big programs, and this is the one that I suggest as it does not have the effect on computer speed that I have found with McAfee.   This is the only program that does not have a fully free version on this list.  Symantec’s Norton Antivirus is Good, What Can I Say, You Gotta Pay for this One 

  Spybot Seek and Destroy is a must.  They keep an updated library of defenitions from known malicious sites which you can just update into the software each time before you scan.  It works really well.  I have found this particularly helpful after using MySpace as there are a handful of ad networks that place tracking items on your machine…and Spybot takes them out…the performance speed of internet explorer is effected by these, and I always notice an increase in speed after running the scan.  It also takes out many other problems that you have been hosting that you didn’t know you had.  Spybot free Software is a Must Have.

AdAware Free Edition by Lavasoft - This is the classic that many people use and theres a reason…it works…they also keep a great update library and this will find and remove many items.  It will also delete your MRU or most recently used logs which show which programs and items that you have used recently.  Since this is a footprint of what you do on the net, removing this greatly enhances your security.  Also check download .com as they provide a free download for the free AdAware.  Get AdAware, its free and powerful.

Panda Software Free Scan - I’ve found this to be about the most thorough of the free spyware scans.  It finds alot of things that the others don’t.  The downside is that without the pay package, you can just see what spyware you have and have to figure out how to remove it…I usually take the information and then search on the net for the removal process…but the alternative would be to buy the software from them…which I have not done, but assume works well as their scanning does.  Panda Free Spyware Scan is Done Through the Web Rather Than a Software Download.  They also have spyware software as an upgrade.

There is no one software that will remove all spyware or viruses.  This is the most important concept to understand.  Using a variety of programs can utilize each programs individual strenghts.

Spyware reinstalls itself - This is a common occourance and one that I have experienced myself.  You remove the spyware and when you reboot the computer, its right back there again.  I suggest running your scan with AdAware or Spybot, whichever says it is taking the spyware out…then after the scan, go to my computer and right click…scroll down to properties and turn off your system restore (go to system restore tab and disable and turn off and apply or hit ok) and reboot the computer.  Immediately turn the sytem restore back on upon rebooting, otherwise you will forget.  Run the scan again and see if it has been removed.  This little trick works on alot of the malware programs that reinstall themselves.

Pop Up Blockers - Its no secret that popups can install the bad stuff.  I use both the Google toolbar and Yahoo toolbar together with popup blockers enabled and very rarely, if ever, get pop ups.  It also tells you if there is one and you can allow it.  I suggest both of these…They also have some great features aside from the popup block.  Some antivirus software will include pop up blockers.

One of my passions in life is drawing and sketching.  I do this mostly when I get stressed out and need to unwind…I stumbled upon a really cool website that allows users to interact with one another drawing and guessing what it is the other person is drawing!  It’s a killer game and I’ve been able to learn more about how to draw watching how other people make simple images for this game.  You get to see what they are doing on a shared whiteboard kind of space.

The collaborative drawing feature of this site requires ActiveX…and the warning screens are a little scary, but I have played it many times without any problems and have run spyware scans afterwards and not detected any problems, so don’t worry about this…

Its basically is setup with chatrooms with a pictionary app added on.  The drawing rotates between users and if you aren’t sketching, you’re guessing, with points added the faster you guess.  There are people and game rooms for the UK and USA as some of the words and slang can differ.  I’ve found playing in the UK rooms has been a really great way to learn some of the word variances between the UK and USA as well!

If you have idle time on your hands and need some entertainment, this is a game site that delivers.  Warning: You will get hooked on playing this drawing game!

After reading about a horse racing betting system that got really good reviews, I decided to give online betting a try to see if I could make a little extra money.  I DO NOT ADVISE THIS online horse racing betting site, I decided against it due to the way the payoffs were quoted as it was confusing to me.  The customer service also seemed foreign based.  After weeks of research, I did find one that was offering a $100 signup bonus when $50 had been wagered.  I was a little skeptical, but after some reading, I found out that this was a completely legal US based horse racing sports book exempt under the law from the recent sports gambling restrictions, so all was on the up and up as far as that goes.  I would say that you would want to look at this as a way to legally get $50 for free (rather than $100) assuming there is a possibility you might lose you initial $50 wagered, I didn’t, I won, so I got $100. It is a $100 sign on bonus, so you can just walk with the $50 if you don’t end up winning initially with no questions asked or problems.  You will either get $50 or $100 depending on how you do.  Either way, you get money.  You can even wager the whole $50 on one race if you want to complete the entire process in less than an hour.  You do have to have the initial $50 deposit to do this.

So Did I Actually Get the $100 Free Money? - My biggest reservation was if I would ever see that $100 *laugh* hearing of some sketchy things in regards to online gaming websites, but I figured it was only $50 at risk, so why not give it a try.  I Got the Money.

I wagered my first $50 in one day, and the next day had the $100 credited to my account.  That part checked out.

Would I Get the Actual Money Sent? - My next reservation was whether they would actually send me the money.  Its one thing to have money in an account, but another to actually get real funds *laugh*  Sure enough, I got to the point with other things that I had going on that I needed to get the money out, and the whole experience was problem free.  I had them send me a check, but they also offered to auto credit my atm/visa card with the filling out of a form, although, I didn’t try that.  Got the check and cashed it with no problems.

Horse Racing Betting Interface - This was really cool.  You can bet on one of many tracks, so you aren’t tied down to just one if you have a numerical horse race system.  I even liked this when I wasn’t using a system as it gave me some variety with the times that I could play.  They keep the same tracks throughout their cycle so you can really learn about what works at each different track.  After talking to their customer service, I also found out that when a particular race track finishes its cycle and is no longer running, they always put other tracks online so that there is a good number to play.

Video - This was amongst the coolest part of this horse race website.  You could watch the race as it was happening if you had a broadband connection hearing the announcers and the audio.  Its just like being right there at the track, and you can hop around from track to track.  As a new user, you can see the video without restriction.  Once you get up and running, they have very minimum betting requirements of either $50 in the past 5 days or $100 in the past 30 to see the video.  You simply have to bet that amount within the period and do nothing and the videos just work.  You can even get the videos on a mobile phone or pda for free within these guidelines, but I didn’t try that.  The nice thing is that it isn’t pay per view and there isn’t any billing to your atm card or account.

Ways to Wager - You don’t have to be in front of a computer all day which is how it sounds.  You can if you want, but they also offer free call in with either an operator or keyed in system up until the post time of the race.  I only used the operator and fooled a little with the automated, but the operator worked best for me.  You can also wager with a cel phone or pda that has internet access.  The wagering and live info is all through a secure connection.

Free Past Performances - I did weeks of research and even tried one other racing site, but this one gave free past performance data by track as long as you wagered on it.  In all of the sites I checked out, none of them offered it.  Trying the other, I found out that if you wanted to analyze the past data, that this could end up being expensive as you had to either buy a dailyracing form magazine (which was limited by track) or buy the reports online.  They have an interface that lets you download the information from right within the account and get credited back for it.  These downloads don’t get charged to your atm card, but rather against your account balance and then are reimbursed to your account.  Its all completely automated.  Again, you will not find this anywhere else.

Live Results, Entries, Odds, Pools and Winning Payoffs - They have an interface that auto-refreshes and shows the number of minutes to race time as well as the odds for each entered horse.  There are also programs for each track with the morning line or odds for each horse.  On the odds, they show what the trackmasters have thought would come in and there’s a probable final odds number (ie: 2-1, 4-1, etc.)  You can also see win, place or show and quinella, trifecta, exacta odds.  Access to these odds was great as you could see a horse that the trackmasters (oddsmakers) rated to come in based on their study of stats and knowledge, yet people did not bet up to that level (ie: you could get paid 4-1 on something that was rated 2-1).  I found this usually happened because a longshot was paying so well that people chose to bet it and take the risk and learned that these entries were called -good values-, meaning that for the money it made sense many times to bet them.  I did really well with working the good values. 

So that’s basically it, as long as you have $50 to start and wager it, you will get your $100 sign on bonus.  Worst case you end up with $50 for less than an hours time put forth.  You can do the wager in one bet which is my suggestion, or 5 individual bets if you are the careful type.

***After several weeks researching the programs of what’s out there for horse betting, I did not find any others that give free past performance data.  The sites that offered video offered it at a very costly rate.  Still further, many were not legal US businesses which would put you in jeapordy of breaking the law to play.  The overseas sportsbooks also did not have acceptable live stats or results.  There was not much room for adjustment based on the changes up until racetime.

After Testing

OK, I like this one…

After using another photo upload plugin in the past which was somewhat limited, I like this one from the test so far (Photo uploading has been quite limited in Wordpress prior to WP Version 2.0.x - Mostly linked to outside photo album sites like Flick.com or just a simple image upload patch).

I loved the Flickr plugin when I messed around with it after Jean of BicycleJournals.net had installed it…Only problem, it was tied to Flickr rather than being self hosted.

The benefits to this are obviously that you don’t have to host the photos on your own space, which could add up after awhile in terms of hosting space (although you would have to upload quite a few photos).

What I like about this program is that it takes your photos and creates two new images from the original.  It makes a thumbnail for the post and then a downsized form of the original that is available on the click.  It can be customized to place the original in the post instead of the thumb…or whatever…and links to albums as well in some regard, although I haven’t gotten too much of a look at this yet as I only have one photo in.

Installation was, well, Wordpress plugin installation…which if you know how to do this via ftp, isn’t bad at all.  It then has a control menu from the options tab in the WP Admin, where you setup the directories to store the photos and configure the various options.  You have to create one directory and make it writeable.

Great plugin so far!
